#17 South by Southwest (SXSW)

#17 South by Southwest (SXSW)

SXSW is something like the showcase for Austin.  Each year Austin uses SXSW to show the country how much it has economically grown since the previous year.  SXSW aims to do this by showcasing the city’s two biggest economics drivers: the live music industry and tech start-ups.  Each year the new band and start up trying to make it in the world claw for their chance to be showcased in the next SXSW, hoping that the right record label or angel investor will be walking through the crowd – Often times they are.  For everyone else, it’s a weeklong event of free concerts, drink specials, and party events with more celebrities in one spot than Texas has ever seen. So check it out and take a picture or it never happened unless it happened and you didn’t take a picture

#16 Concert at The Backyard

#16 Concert at The Backyard

I personally have not been to a concert at The Backyard … yet.  It sits just outside the city and everyone raves about it as the best concert venue in the area.  It constantly tops the charts as the best place for concerts, and as far as I know, is one of the original venues that helped build Austin’s reputation as the musical capital of the world. So check it out and take a picture or it never happened unless it happened and you didn’t take a picture

#15 Concert at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q

#15 Concert at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q

Because the music scene is so prominent in Austin, almost every bar tries to open at least some kind of Venue for Concerts.  I don’t know if Stubbs got lucky with its location or if some genius venue curator carved this back area into the perfect landscape, but in my opinion Stubbs is perfect concert venue.  Perfect size, sloped toward the stage just right, and no matter where you are at the concert you feel like you are in the front row.  I saw Slightly Stoopid here and Third Eye Blind – two of my favorites bands and I’ll never forget it.  The lead singer of Slightly Stoopid, Miles Doughty, crowd surfed on a surf board while smoking a joint, and Third eye blind used the great venue as an opportunity to film their music video. #14 Salt Lick

#14 Salt Lick

Probably the single most famous Texas Barbecue restaurant.  “I am from Austin.” “Oh Really, do you know Salt Lick? I went there once!”  Of coarse you did.  This place IS Texas Barbecue. Pounds upon tons of meat cooked daily in open pit fires.  If you want Texas Barbecue you go to Salt Lick. So check it out and take a picture or it never happened unless it happened and you didn’t take a picture

#13 The County Line

#13 The County Line

Texas Barbecue.  Brisket, white loaf bread, and barbecue sauce – The County Line does it right.  Located right on the waterfront, County Line must go through a ridiculous amount of cows each day.  Huge plates of meat are carted around by waiters.  It looks like entire cows are brought to each person’s dinner table.  Maybe not everything is bigger in Texas, but the barbecue portions at this restaurant certainly are.  And man do they do it right. This is Texas Barbeque. So check it out and take a picture or it never happened unless it happened and you didn’t take a picture

#12 Moonlight Tower

#12 Moonlight Tower

Party at the Moon Tower! Made famous by the classic movie “Dazed and Confused.” In the movie, Austin High’s senior class planned for an epic graduation party only to get their hopes stifled by an untimely keg delivering.  All hope for a graduation party was lost- that is until at 3:20 of THIS trailer, when the idea to host the party at the moon tower was born.  Party at the Moon Tower!

More than a key point in an awesome movie. The “Moonlight Tower” as it is officially called, is a Texas registered landmark.  Popular in most American and European cities in the 1800s, Austin is now the only city in the world to still use them.  The towers line the parameter of the city and it is thought that they were first erected in response to a serial killer that was creeping around the area at the time.

The famous Dazed and Confused tower is in Zilker Park. So check it out and take a picture or it never happened unless it happened and you didn’t take a picture

#11 Austin City Limits

#11 Austin City Limits

The only picture with proof is me texting at the festival visibly wearing my three day pass wrist band - lame, I know

Austin City Limits (ACL) is the event of the year.  In a city that calls itself the music capital of the world, ACL has emerged as the largest music showcase of the year.  Huge headliners from around the world come for this three-day music festival.  Sold out in seconds, people crowd their computers waiting for tickets to come to sale month before the line up is even announced. So check it out and take a picture or it never happened unless it happened and you didn’t take a picture.

#10 Kerbey Lane

#10 Kerbey Lane

With a 24-hour menu and a location between the bars, dorms, and frats of UT, you can imagine that the staff at Kerbey Lanes has seen some wild late night shenanigans.  Kerbey Lanes is the place where the night ends, and sometimes where the morning begins.  It’s UTs drunken food spot, and it has gotten quite the reputation and recognition for it.  Meet me at Kerbey lanes at the end of the night! So check it out and take a picture or it never happened unless it happened and you didn’t take a picture.

#9 Jeremiah The Innocent

#9 Jeremiah The Innocent

Proof

LA has the Hollywood sign, NYC has the Empire state building, Austin has the “Hi, how are you” frog.   Graffitied years ago songwriter Daniel Johnston in a back ally of downtown, this frog captures the culture of the city. Kurt Cobain wore the image on his shirt to the MTV awards furthering its fame. One friend that lives in Austin takes a picture of everyone that visits him in Austin infront of this frog to remember everyone in his life. So check it out and take a picture or it never happened unless it happened and you didn’t take a picture.

#8 Warehouse District

#8 Warehouse District

Warehouse District is Austin’s small, but impressive club scene.  Most of them have emerged in the small area between 6th and 5th street called the warehouse district.  Austin isn’t known for its club scene. In a way, this is a good thing.  It results in the Warehouse District having a lot of the benefits of the club scene like table service, classer dressed people, dance music, but without all the disadvantages like absurd long lines, marked up prices, and Guidos. All in all good time, would recommend. So check it and take a picture or it didn’t happen, unless it happened and you didn’t take a picture.
